I am a believer, though, in petitioning the FCC for the revocation of
the broadcast license of any station that goes to an "all-Christmas"
format before 1 November. The line must be drawn.
I listen to only one station ordinarily: KDFC, the only remaining
all-classical station in the Bay Area. What I'd like to see them
do is not play any Christmas music, properly so-called, until
midnight on Christmas Eve. "Silver Bells" arranged for string
quartet? Sure. "Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer" as if Mozart had
written it? Absolutely. They do do a lot of that. But nothing
specifically referring to the Feast of the Nativity until Advent
is over, at midnight Christmas Eve.
I listen primarily to KBEM, the only remaining jazz station in the
Twin Cities area. I'm pleased to say that they play no Christmas
or winter songs until about the 21st.
Now, if only I could convince them that Christmas runs until the
6th of January, and winter until roughly Easter, they'd truly be
doing things right. But, come the 26th, they discontinue both.
