We ask taxpayers -- some of whom are pacifists -- to shell out for weapons. We ask taxpayers -- some of whom believe in private enterprise approaches to most things -- to shell out for Social Security and a bunch of other social programs. We ask taxpayers -- some of whom do not drive -- to shell out for roads. All of these, and many more, are done on the principle that society as a whole benefits from having a strong defense, a social safety net for certain things,

All of those, and many more--but not subsidizing professional sports--can be given a reasoned justification. But in the case of sports reason is out the window. It's pure fraudulent boondoggle.

Not according to some of the information posted here. The economic benefit can be at least reasonably argued, and society as a whole *CERTAINLY* benefits from a strong economy. A lot more than from a given performing orchestra, I would think.

There are things that would improve the economy a ton more, than building a pricey sports stadium. Head Start preschool programs for all poor tots in the region, let us say. They're just not as sexy.
