No. A thousand times no. Firefox runs like *crap* on an unupgraded PC from
98, be it ever so much of a powermachine back when or -- as is much more
likely -- a midrange machine. If you run XP or 2k (neither of which were
available back then so don't technically count as unupgraded) you're gonna
have *seriously* too little memory, with somewhere between 32 and 256
megs, and if you still run 98 the issues with memory will be slightly less
pronounced, but still severe since firefox is a total hog, but frankly the
concept that 98 *ever* ran "fine" is offensive to me.

Upgrading a mid-98 machine to be useful is trivial; all you need is to
up the RAM to half a gig or so. I speak from experience; I have a
machine from that era (Pentium 3/450) that runs XP + Firefox (2.0)
without too much trouble. It takes a little while to start up (just
clocked it: with nothing els running, about 25 seconds to start), but
once started, it's fine.

Sure, that helps a lot. RAM is *the* bottleneck on those sorts of
machines. Even so, my firefox regularly swells to over 500 megs by itself
-- you might be able to keep it down by not having excessive tabs open,
though.

On the other hand, P2/P3 233-550 machines typically run with a BX chipset,
BX chipsets have a problem with many 256M sticks, and getting any
PC100/133 mem these days is a nightmare even in the secondhand market. It
might be easier in the US, I suppose.
