In the Year of the Golden Pig, the Great and Powerful pullo declared:
Most bank cards nowadays can be run as either debit or credit, the
Debit Card Payment => Enter PIN. No signature
Credit Card Payment => Sign my name. No PIN.
only difference being how the transaction's processed -- debit
deducts the money from your account instantaneously, whereas credit
might take a day to show up.
And I repeat: If I make a CC purchase I am required to sign but not required
to enter a PIN. If I make a DC purchase I am not required to sign but I am
required to enter a PIN.
I suppose if I used my bank card as a debit transaction and selected a CC
account then I would not have to sign but enter a PIN.
No. If your bank card has a Mastercard or Visa logo on it, you can
run it through as either debit or credit. When the PIN pad comes up,
hit cancel, then press credit. Once the transaction goes through,
you'll be asked to sign just like with a credit card.
I suspect that in
addition to possible ATM fees you mention it would be treated as a cash
advance and not subject to the interest-free grace period.
What interest? If you run your card through as debit, the money
comes straight from your account and you might be assessed an ATM
fee. If you run the card through as credit, the bank will put a hold
on the money but it'll be a day or so before the payment shows up.
The only way you might be charged interest is if your bank allows
you to charge more than you have in the account.
