I have at last got around to reading Bujold's Vorkosigan
series and decided to start with the first in the
chronological story line,
Shards
of Honour. I have to agree that all those who recommended her
books
to
me were correct â?? she's a great writer and storyteller, and
I
found
it hard to put the book down. However, the SF elements in the
story
are
relatively weak. I've posted a full review on my blog.

Shards was her first novel published, and was written more as a
romance
than a traditional sf story. You'll find the flavor of the
books changes
(on purpose), but the writing gets better and better.

I'm glad to hear that. But in the case of Shards, it's perhaps a
pity that the cover of my edition shows a landscape with
futuristic towers and flying machines - not a person
anywhere...that raises expectations of the kind of story
contained within.

Blame Baen for that. They're famous for covers that have no
detectable relationship with the story they contain. Look for the
Baen logo before judging books by the cover, etc.

(And their covers can't hold a candle, for badness, to some of the
non-US covers. http://www.dendarii.co.uk/Covers/German/twa_de.jpg
for instance.)
