ID a Story

I haven't posted here in at LEAST 10 years. Probably more like 15, but
I'm not sure and I'm not going to do a google search.
Sometime in the distant past I read a story that took place in London
during the Blitz. There was a group of people who were helping to dig
people out of collapsed buildings and one of them turns out to be a
Vampire. He has an uncanny ability to locate victims deep in the
rubble.
The protagonist of the story is named Jack. I don't remember the
Vampire's name. The vampire gets killed by a collapse in the end,
asking for Jack, but Jack thinks its a car jack and not him.
The reason I ask is that a buddy of mine is on a USAR team here in the
SF Bay Area and I was describing the story to him. He has seen MANY
deployments and mentioned how useful such a guy could be, even with
the obvious downside. He was at Oklahoma City, Hurricane Iniki, "The
Pile" at the WTC, New Orleans, and a dozen other places he hasn't
bothered to mention. I'd like to find the story and print him out a
copy, or give him a book that it is in. For all I know, I HAVE the
story somewhere.
Thanks for any help you might give.
