Maybe there's a certain subject you should avoid, regardless
of what alias you're using.

Peter Trei-
You have always been kind and I appriciate your helpful thoughts,
but if that trash can go on the front page, why can't I put Veritas on
there? That is not right. At least once. Again, thank you for all
your kindness. Ken Hogan

Hey Ken,

You're laboring under some fundamental misunderstandings of how a
forum (actually a newsgroup on Usenet) works. I wouldn't be saying
anything about it except that it's veryveryvery much getting in
your way, while simultaneously driving some of us nuts to varying
degrees:

1) Most of us see a list of topics, all of which are subjects
being discussed in rec.arts.sf.written; these topics are
usually called "threads". When you mentioned the woman in
another forum who led you to the Vonnegut, that was merely
in another thread (another topic) being discussed here on
rec.arts.sf.written. At this very moment, a small sample
of the many active thread titles are:
Daleks conquer 'scariest villain' poll
"Terminators of Endearment"
Soul jars and such
Ellison-Groth lawsuit settled
Robert Heinlein at 100
John W. Campbell Memorial Award (2006)
Dragon Slippers
VERITAS- Forum from April
Looking for help: References to Farmer and Fort
The Human Homeworld
Question: From the Inside of a Dyson Sphere...

Those are just a sample, and each represents a discussion in
progress here on rec.arts.sf.written. Like any other discussion
between human beings, discussions here can split into tangents
or minutiae or whatever; those are usually called "sub-threads".

2) No one is choosing to put anything on your front page. We all
access the messages here via a news server. Since we are doing
this via a bunch of different servers, messages can (and do)
arrive to each of us in different orders and times. [This is
why Usenet is called an asynchronous medium.] To most of us,
this gets sorted into a chronological list of messages which is
usually also sorted by threads (topic). When you see something
on your front page, that just means it arrived recently. No one
wrangled the system to put it there.

3) I am confident that you would be absolutely shocked at the
breadth and depth of knowledge and experience found in the
people on this newsgroup. I say this primarily because you
peristently make sweeping generalizations about the people
and topics here which are demonstrably wrong. This is partly
related to your not seeing/being aware of most of the discussions
here, and hence not being exposed to many of the people or topics.

4) Lastly, if there is written sf you want to hear about or talk
about, bring it up (excepting your own book - it is very poor
etiquette to start a conversation about your own work. If
someone else asks questions about your book, it is fine to
enter the conversation. Some of the authors here do that,
and some do not.) If people are interested in what you've
brought up, they'll probably pick up on it.

Tony,
You also have been nothing but nice and full of information that
didn''t have hate spewed through it and I have aprriciated it more
than you know. I have to believe that you are totally correct, and I
am dead wrong. I don't see what the rest of you see and would be
shocked at what was there. I have posted many other things on here,
current history (although blowing up the world wasn't accepted well),
ancient history, ancient world plate tectonics, etc. and have enjoyed
it all. I run into to trouble when I go back to my book. It being of
supreme interest to me, but not to the rest of you, I would get tired
myself I think. I see the trash on the front billboard and think,
these idiots get to put their space ships have landed on it, but my
book is forbidden? I have had a fit of temper, not realizing no one
pays attention to those. It won't happen again. Several of you have
explained the how's and why's this happens. You have always been
nice, polite and explained in detail, that took much time. I hope you
have a happy life, and maybe we'll run into each other here again.
Regards, Ken Hogan
