The first is one of my all time favorite novels (no 2). I'm currently
reading the second (though the way of Darwinia which isn't very good
IMHO).
So far it's pretty interesting to see how similar they are, describing
how humanity reacts (not very much mostly) to this sudden phenomena.
Are there any books with a similar plot (please give a one line
description of the plot)? I like the idea of such plots where their is
a central mystery at the start and humanity has to figure it out.
Failing that I'm also interested in similar plots, where the moon
disappears suddenly one day, or a twin moon appears or anything
astronomically wild like that occurs overnight.
Thanks
I recall a short story by Asimov set in Spacers universe. A supposedly smart earth politician intentionally rubs the spacer worlds the wrong way - so they bar earthmen going to stars. Politician apparently did this so the insulted earthmen would get back their vigor as an emotional reaction. I forget the story name though. Not one of the better from Asimov.
There are at least 3 from Arthur Clarke:
1) A very small subplot in "3001 The Final Odyssey": Aliens want to destroy humans because they are an irresponsible species - by attempting to place a black shield between earth & sun so earth will turn uninhabitable. Humans quickly defeat aliens.

2) "2010 Odyssey Two": Jupiter planet is converted to a sun (Lucifer) by aliens as part of a terrafarming project on one of the Jovian moons - so earth now has two suns.

3) "The Sands of Mars": Phoboes, a moon of Mars, is converted to a sun by humans as part of a project to terrafarm Mars. So there are 2 suns in earth's skies.
