In Greg Egan's Quarantine - one day an impenetrable Bubble appears
around the whole solar system.

In Robert Charles Wilson's Spin - Something similar occurs but this
time around Earth only.

The first is one of my all time favorite novels (no 2). I'm currently
reading the second (though the way of Darwinia which isn't very good
IMHO).

So far it's pretty interesting to see how similar they are, describing
how humanity reacts (not very much mostly) to this sudden phenomena.

Are there any books with a similar plot (please give a one line
description of the plot)? I like the idea of such plots where their is
a central mystery at the start and humanity has to figure it out.

Failing that I'm also interested in similar plots, where the moon
disappears suddenly one day, or a twin moon appears or anything
astronomically wild like that occurs overnight.

YASID: A short story where the Earth was quarantined for centuries
as being too warlike. An impenetrable shield was placed around the
planet. In the course of time an even greater threat appeared. the
Galactic Overlords free the Earth on condition Mankind fight as
allies.

The Earthlings have been preparing for this day for a long time.
The ambassador to them is overwhelmed when the whole planet moves out
behind his ship to move to the attack. His assistant then comments
faintly "They're bringing their moon, too."

Already mentioned on this thread: Alan Dean Foster's "With Friends Like This".
