But it's a poor thing compared to "Bringing Up Baby". The
importance of the setting in that is an interesting question.
Nowadays, if a woman finds a man attractive, she has a lot of ways
to let him know that. She needn't constantly improvise settings in
which he might notice her, so Hepburn's actions make a loony sort
of sense, while Streisand's are just silly. And my favorite scene
in BUB is the diner party at the aunt's house, which sustains a
high level of comedy for what seems like an hour, all stemming
from the fact that she's convinced that Grant is a lunatic but is
too well-mannered to say so in front of him. We have lost that
sort of reticence. WUD substitutes for it a high-action chase
scene with lots of sight gags. That's funny too, but it depends
on a different sort of energy.
Dear god. I've enjoyed "What's Up, Doc?" several times, but the
only time I tried to watch "Bringing Up Baby" I had to walk out of
the theater about thirty minutes into it, literally shaking in
anger. I wanted -- I *needed* -- to reach into the movie and kill
that Katherine Hepburn character.
