Hmm, he was someone who came up from the working class and despite the
"eat the rich" message makes no bones of the fact that the morlocks
have devolved into something inhuman while the upper classes still
retained the core essence of what it means to be human.
Not quite how I read it. AFAIR At one point Wells has the time
traveller speculate that the Morlocks must have retained some
intelligence and adapatability in order to keep their industry going.
OTOH, the Eloi have become a sub-species of air-heads who are now
being kept as food animals.
In other words he would be happy to see the working class moving up to
the middle class and better.
And while of course he had an ego as colosal as any seen in Victorian
times, me thinks we do him an injustice by thinking he held his ideas
more dear than the ultimate fate of mankind.
One of the interesting features (to me) of the Time Machine is that,
while it is written from a nineteenth century socialist perspective,
it doesn't include any prediction that a workers revolution would take
place. Instead, a more evolutionary process seems to take place in
which the downtrodden workers become the Morlocks (who are the real
masters of the future time). At the same time, the ruling classes
(who have no real challenges in their lives) devolve into the Eloi.
Cheers,
Nigel.
