I read H G Wells' _Time Machine_ over the weekend.
I was glad to see proof positive that H G Wells would have been a
towering giant of the field no matter when he had been active. I was
also left wishing that I had not actually read the story when still a
child. This is because with familiarity with the concept, the truly
mind-boggling awesomeness of the Morlocks and the end of the red giant
Sun doesn't impress itself on me with the force that it otherwise
would have. :-)

But I have a fairly strong recollection that the Time Traveller had
had 3 different adventures
1) With the morlocks
2) The end of life
3) And an adventure somewhere in the 21st or 22nd century.

The 3rd episode is not present in this version that I read,
anthologized in the SFWA Hall of Fame Book II A.(The novella
collection). The copyright also says 1934 whereas wikipedia tells me
that the story was first published in serial form in the New Review
through 1894 and 1895.

I dare say this removal of material makes H G Wells vision even more
powerful.

But still, does anyone know of the revision history of this genre
defining classic?


The Project Gutenberg version also lacks the 20th/21st century "adventure". I can recall this being included in a 1960s film of the novel, but the original book version did not have it. Possibly the film is the source of your memory. Given the knowledge of history from the time of the original until the 60s and the Cold War, it would not have been difficult for the script writers to insert it.

Conceivably there was something in the original serial that was cut from the book version, but I have never seen it. The film may have inserted ideas from the Wells-inspired 1930s film script, "The Shape of Things to Come".
