I'm not James Nicoll, but I grew up on the US side in a town on the
border, and this was actually reasonably common. High school students
would cross over to New Brunswick, where the drinking age was 19 and
fake IDs from the US were winked at; and then when they were picked up
in Canada for being drunk and disorderly -- or worse, for driving
drunk -- they'd be invited to remain in the US for an extended period
of time.

Am I right in thinking that official attitudes about the
seriousness of DUI are one way in which Canada and the US can be
distinguished? Although I note that wossname from BC got re-elected
after his DUI, he committed it in Hawaii, a far-off land of which we
know little.

Technically, George W. Bush's DUI is enough to get him barred from
entering Canada.

This appears to be for a different reason, but it's hardly surprising.

He admits to violating our drug laws, which while they are not
as draconian as the American kind is not something that I would recommend
visitors do. He also got caught breaking our labour laws, the imperialist
pig.
