I used to have a thesis that you can tell where a fantasy
author lives from looking at the map at the front.
Maurice Gee, _Halfmen of O_: single continent, sea to the
*north*, cold bits to the south. Obviously somewhere in the
southern hemisphere, probably New Zealand, because Australia
would most likely have the sea to the east or west. (Correct!)
Interesting. Another fictional world with southern hemispherical
location. I thought Chalion (et seq.) was unique in this
property.
It doesn't always work, but it's reliable enough to be
amusing...
Chalion was based on Spanish history, so your thesis wouldn't
apply to that world. Although Bujold did rotate the map 180
degrees and then dragged it down to the southern hemisphere.
In her other works, Barrayar is based loosely on the USA, but
Vorbarr Sultana is congruent with Washington DC and Vorkosigan's
District with Tennessee. She lives in Minnesota, so your theory
fails on that one. The Sharing Knife world is based on Ohio,
where she grew up.
