I just happened to look at Briggs' website, and saw that her contract

They've been consistently on the Amazon top 25 list for SFF, which I
check weekly -- the first one was on for a long stretch last year, and
the second one is on now.

Briggs' books are like reading an Anita Blake novel written by someone
who can actually write. Mercy's complicated love life is getting old
fast, although I'm glad to say the books are pretty chaste thus far.
Butcher of the Dresden Files also seems enamored of Hamilton, unless
it's pure coincidence that they're both so fond of the phrase, "ass
deep in alligators."

In my deep dark past, I was a subscriber to the lkh-l mailing list. Butcher
was a regular on it for years, before becoming a published author. There
was a lot of discussion when he announced the sale of his first novel (the
first Harry Dresden book).

My memory from the list was that Butcher was a huge LKH fan through the
first 6 books, and, like a lot of us, was disappointed with the direction
of the later books.

And, of course, 'ass deep in alligators' was from the earlier books
(actually, 'ass deep in alligators' was the normal state, 'neck deep in
alligators' was when Sigmund moved from the bedside table to the pillow).

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
