Freehold and Orphans of the Sky. After reading those two I swore that

disturbing elements as "Farnham's Freehold." You started with the worst
possible combination.
Others have given recommendations down thread which I think are worth
reviewing. They have the imagination without the off-putting elements.
The one most nearly opposite FF and OotS would be "The Star Beast". If
that's too far in the opposite direction there is plenty of stuff in
between.
I'm not telling you that you have to like Heinlein's work. I'm just
concerned that you're shutting yourself off from a lot of good reading
due to (very) bad luck in what you read first.
