That's just silly. Shoot the nuclear waste at the Sun. Shoot all the waste we want, the Sun will burn more.

I think you missed the point. If we had stored nuclear waste on the moon, there would have been a horrible accident 7 years ago.
Why would we use the shuttle to launch nuclear waste? There's more reliable one-shot rockets that can do that. The shuttle seems overqualified for such a mission.
That said, any kind of explosion in mid air would be a might ... pesky.
