-- maybe reading other posts has broughts this to mind, but _Cannery Row_
needs a reread; it's been too long and I remember it as very funny
Parts are very funny (the frog hunt) and other parts very dark. For
purer comedy, you might try his _Tortilla Flat_.
I have felt a Steinbeck binge building the last couple of years. That's
another book to throw on the pile. I'll probably need the relief after yet
another reading of _Of Mice and Men_.
Or go straight to the unrelieved dead seriousness of _In Dubious Battle_,
the ideal Steinbeck book to need relief from. (In the sense that nothing is
as refreshing as a brick wall, the minute you stop smashing your head
against it.)
