"Many years ago I read a short story about a wanderer who camped on
night on an empty, windswept plain. He camped three nights--thinking
each night he heard voices, saw movement--and on the third night he
spoke with a ghostly resident of the plain. It seems the residents of
the great city, which covered the plain, had paid so much attention to
commerce and wealth, that they had slowly forgotten to notice the
natural world around them.
The more they failed to stop and notice their surroundings, the more
the surroundings dimmed and, eventually, vanished altogether.
There's a segment like that in _The Phantom Tollbooth,_ but I don't think
that's what you remember.
