That's from the Hitchhiker's Guide.

In HHGttG it's "a small dog", not an amoeba.

I suspect that the story Gene had in mind was the classic mentioned in
a fairly recent thread - "Pictures Don't Lie" by Katherine Maclean
(Galaxy, August 1951, and much anthologised since then).
