I was lucky enough to see a pre-screening of this film last night
in Seattle. Al Gore made this movie and attended last night's
pre-screening for a question and answer session. Its a good movie to
recommend to friends who nod vaguely (as I did six months ago) when
global warming and climate change are mentioned. The film conveys a lot
of complex material in an engaging manner that is easy to comprehend.
Moreover, Mr. Gore's humane narrative serves to translate climate
change from just another political issue into a moral imperative.
I took away many things from last night's event, but I think I'll
stick to just one. Al Gore was the first victim of the Bush
administration. However, he did not retreat into bitterness or regret.
Instead, he simply took his slide show out on the road for six years
and communicated to students, community groups, trade associations, and
world leaders the problem he has been working to solve for decades.
In my experience, this sort of Jeffersonian sense of civic duty is
rare in America and almost non-existant in high office. The best
comparison I can make would have to be to Justice William O. Douglas. I
have no higher praise.
I assume better education and comprehension of this issue on the
part of our European Bretheren. However, the movie I saw last night
could easily have substituted for five hundred or so pages of some of
the materials I've read over the past six months. Its a good way for us
Yanks to catch on fast to what humans generally, and Americans
disproportionality, are doing to our kids. Take some time and see it
during its opening weekend (which varies by City).
