I'm attending Norwescon this weekend in the Seattle area and was
wondering if any of the posters or lurkers here were going. Anyone here
gone before? Got any suggestions for panels/events I just should _not_
miss (schedule permitting, that is)? I know a couple of the writers who
will be there, but, frankly, I'm feeling a little overwhelmed with the
sheer size of this shindig. Suggestions for survival?
I'll be there. I've been there every year since '93, and I'm not going
to miss it this year just because it's 2500 miles away from me now :)
Yeah, it's big. What not to miss depends on what your interested in.
There's always good writing panels, though some of them you have to
start preparing well before now to get into. But many you don't.
The science track is always good - I always try to go to much more of
those than I ever actually make it to.
In my opinion, the hospitality room is not to be missed - guaranteed to
find an interesting conversation with someone, or some group of
someone's, even if you're the asocial type. And drink and munchies (or
actual food type food if you show up at the right time).
Room parties are worth checking out, even if you're not really into the
party thing. They range from people sitting around talking, with no
alcohol, music, or smoking, to loud wild baccanalias and rooms that
even a dedicated smoker can't breathe in. Normally, I help run the
Belter party, and the Geeks Without Borders room party, which are both
kind of in-between: good food, more non-alcoholic drinks than
alcoholic, and music quiet enough to converse over. (Unfortunately,
neither of them were able to be held this year for various reasons, but
there are other good ones.)
Survival suggestions? Eat breakfast. Drink water. Beware the fooze.
There's a Denny's across the street. The hotel restaurant is generally
slow and on the expensive side, but not outlandishly so. Wear a
costume and everybody will think you're cool. Wear a swimsuit if you
go into the hot tub. Don't get between the Klingons and the squirrel.
The proper response to "Hail Scott Bakula" is "Oh, Boy."
