I don't know, but I'd strongly suspect that it was not so much the
writers as CoC who was a "name" by then, and probably wanted to
play a "nicer" Archie. Actors are not always the best judges of
direction for their characters..

(To be fair, this is not completely implausible as people of Archie's
generation did a lot of changing over the years. "Not completely
implausible" is not the same as "good TV" though.)
