Nobody expects you to control where your posts appear in relation to
other posts. Top posting refers to where your comments appear with
respect to the quoted text in the post you are replying to. The
following sig demonstrates why many people prefer in-line (not
bottom!) posting.

This comes up every once in a while, mostly because Usenet protocol is
different from corporate practice. It kills efficiency to bottom post
in business, but Usenet is an asynchronous conversation that needs
either bottom or intertwined posting.

Right. And, in business, you're IME rarely either addressing a long
article point by point or giving it a thorough fisking. But you do
want a complete audit trail of the entire conversation. So you let
things accumulate from the bottom, insert your material at the top,
and if you need to quote, paste in a second copy, leaving the original
where it was. None of that last part is appropriate for Usenet,
however, thus the animus toward top-posting...
