(SPOILERS)
Don't remember the name or author either, but just to add a bit more
detail, the catatonic in his dreams inhabits an elaborate
sword-and-sorcery fantasy world, in which he is a Conan-like hero
figure. The protagonist keeps messing with the heroic fantasy, until
the dreamer in a final fit of spite puts them in a scenario where
they're facing an ultimate Lovecraftian horror...
Thank you, that jarred something loose. It's "Dreams are Sacred" by Peter
Phillips. (http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?41461) It ends with the
protagonist planning to enter the dreams of a gorgeous blonde that he's met
in the catatonic's psyche.
