What articles I can find on the web all seem to agree that Universal
greenlit BG in the Summer of 77, once it was clear that Star Wars was
a phenomenon. Mostly they trace the series idea back to a series
proposal Larson had had in the 60's, "Adam's Ark", though one claims
that he got the original BG script from another writer. (Since BG
was the subject of a plagiarism suit by 20th Century Fox and
Lucasfilm, there was incentive on all sides to fuzz memories in one
direction or another.) I can't find any pointers to primary sources,
so take that for what it's worth.
