Science Fiction tries to reflect the best known science on a subject.
There have been many accidents like you describe, with minimal impact
to the human population.

The Soviet nuclear reactor that re-entered over Canada in 1978 caused
quite a bit of concern, but no long term damage.

Good point about science fiction. I wonder if fantasy fiction ever dealt with this sort of stuff, like a spell which changes a place into a wasteland, making the land "cursed", or something like that (cf. the 'abomination of desolatio'n the bible refers to).

Wouldn't it be possible in real-life for someone to wanted to, to deliberately spread out some ("salt the earth") radioactive materials? Radioactive dust is a more humane sort of land-mine, which does not kill but only causes cancer, and therefore makes permanent settlement impossible.

I wonder why this sort of weapon is not talked about more than it is. It is so obvious, and so simple, and so effective. The place for this to be discussed is in the realm of fiction, and fiction alone.
