Keep in mind I've never been in that position so I can't be certain how I
would act. It makes me think of that rock climber who had to hack off his
arm to escape the rock that trapped him.

Ah. I see. I was uncomfortable with my phrasing - the use of 'basis'. It
wasn't really what I wanted to convey but I couldn't think of a better word.

Much less concise but more accurate.

Agreed. I misused the word. Substitute the above phrase for 'basis'

General question. What is the etiquette when running a post through the
spellchecker when quoted misspellings are caught? Correct the other person's
typos or not?
