International laws against cloning and that level of gene alteration.
They repeated it several times.
They had considered applications several times over--and as long as they
chucked aside their conscience to allow the children to be exploited then
that would be all well and good.

Seriously, there are restrictions on the kind of medical research done
today--especially on kids. Obviously the international agreements today are
not universally agreed on or even held, but they are widespread. Moreover
the docs compounded the problem of cloning with the type of brainwashing
that has often been associated with BOYS OF BRAZIL mindset, not just cloning
Hitler but recreating the same traumatic events he experienced, (e.g., the
death of a parents while young, etc.).
As far as potential commercial applications, they tend to all amount to
child slavery the way it was used with all the "training" and "placement".
Used merely as fertility treatment, aka reproductive cloning, where you
clone someone and raised baby then that would be different. But then you
deal the social and psychological results of essentially raising "yourself"
or expectations that the younger clone is not you since they would have
different experiences, or if raised by someone NOT the biological parent /
sibling the usual issues adopted kids have combined with the fact that
there's someone who is exceedingly close to how you could look and act like.
Moreover there are issues with lowering gene diversity and increasing the
risk of some kind of mega mutant genetic disease. Plus the buying or
stealing of celebrity cells for cloning. Identity theft is bad enough as is
with people rummaging thru your trash for credit info, but imagine them
running thru the trash at restaurants and gyms and public bathroom and
studios to get the cells of celebrities to clone.
