After thinking about sci fi movies and shows that I liked I find that I
can enjoy a movie even if the characters aren't all that interesting to
me. With TV shows that have an ongoing cast I find that the ones I like
the most have characters that I really enjoy. Perhaps that's why I
never was a big fan of the Star Trek series except for the STE. I also
liked B5, TSCC, Farscape, BSG2 and Space Above and Beyond.
I don't see why this would be specific to Sci Fi.
With TV shows you're watching them every week, so they become familiar,
like a set of acquaintances. If you're going to join them every week,
you generally have to relate to some of them. Most successful TV shows
have characters that viewers can invest themselves in, or characters who
are interesting enough to draw you back week after week (this is what
carries a show like "House' -- he's not relatable to most people, but
you're always curious about what he's going to do next).
Movies, on the other hand, tend to be more plot driven, because you only
have to devote a couple of hours to it. If the characters aren't that
interesting, you never have to see them again.
