Pretty much EVERY program starts at a specific time and they let
you know in advance what that time is. Does that sometimes get
delayed because of circumstances? Yes. But that delay is what
we're discussing here.

Exactly.

As an example, T: TSCC started at 7 PM CST on Sunday. If the
football game had run long, then you tune in at 7 PM CST and
see where in the game they're at.

Which means we could be sitting waiting for the actual delayed
start time for 5 minutes, or 30 minutes, or an hour, and don't
know which. That's my point.

The problem with it being preceded by a sporting event is that
the desired program can be pushed back. By my count, COLD CASE,
for example, has been delayed four times this season: the first
time by ~45 minutes, the second by ~30 minutes, the third time
by almost an hour, and the last by ~30 minutes.

Why should one have to sit and doodle for 45 minutes waiting to
see when the show you want to watch is going to come on?

Well, that depends on your definition of doodling, now doesn't it?

Doing anything unproductive to mark time until the program you want
to watch comes on.

Especially if there's something on another station that you like
and could be watching live instead.

One would think that the "something on another station that you like,"
with it's guaranteed start time would be a prime candidate for that
DVR thing you people keep babbling is better than sliced bread, but I
digress.

Yes, it does, doesn't it? Except that if the desired show is delayed
by an hour, instead of watching one show for an hour, then watching
the other show for an hour by timeshifting -- which takes two hours
total (actually more like 1 hour, 45 minutes, since you can speed
through the commercials of the timeshifted show) -- you sit around
waiting X minutes for the football-delayed show to start, then spend
an hour watching it, then spend the other 45 minutes watching the
time-shifted show.

The amount of time waiting for the delayed show to start is wasted
time.
