I'm pretty sure the flim Jeffery had in mind, which had a plot similar
to "Deep Impact", was "Aramgeddon", not "Space Cowboys". The latter
was actually a fairly pleasant flick about a bunch of ex-astronauts
being called out of retirement for one last mission - to deal with a
60s era spacecraft about to de-orbit on its own. Apparently nobody
hung onto the old manual, and these guys are the only ones left alive
who know enough about the thing to prevent this. (There's more to the
plot, but I don't want to spoil it in case you decide to give it a
shot.) Clint Eastwood, Tommy Lee Jones, James Garner and Donald
Sutherland star in the film.

Second the nod for Space Cowboys... I don't know that I'd classify it as sci-fi by the strictest definitions of the term, simply because there's no real fiction to the science. Nevertheless, it is an entertaining "popcorn flick" with a great ensemble cast.

And as for voxwoman's reference to the "animal crackers scene", that was Amageddon, not Deep Impact. Despite a similar premise, and a few similarities in the plots, the two are really quite different movies.
