No.
What's to hate?
The absurd amounts of money spent to run it, promote it, televise it.
The adoration of people who've really contributed nothing to the
world. The continued popularisation of pointless patriotism. The
relegation of real news behind the olympics fluff. The use by the
Chinese - and the acceptance by the media (often to protect broadcast
rights) - of the games as a propaganda tool. The relegation and
disruption of regular programming not only on the broadcaster but on
other channels. The expectation that you're interested in the stories
that people want to share about what they've seen on the telecasts.
The increase in professional competitors. The sponsorship and
advertising juggernauts connected to the events. Other things.
So, stop avoiding the question: what's not to hate?
Well, how about for 2 weeks every 2 years, we get a break from all the bad news (and endless political campaigning) to watch people have fun? We get to see them pour heart and soul into a contest that is over in seconds, to watch the celebration of victory, and the despair of defeat. I'd much rather watch the Olympics, even in sports that I don't follow regularly, than another stupid ad about how someone supposedly spent too much money on a freaking desk!
Michael (not Mark) Phelps was awesome; Usain Bolt was electrifying, even if he did showboat a bit; the US basketball team finally won the gold medal again, as did the men's volleyball team to help ease the grief of their coach's loss. What's not to feel good about?
The media is what it is, and network coverage will always be more about the network than what they are covering.
But now they are over, so....back to your regularly scheduled reruns.
