I think you'd be safe with an Enterprise that looked like the original
done on a higher budget and with modern effects. Eliminate some of the
obvious archaisms, like the clicking of the computer or the mechanical
gauges in the sick bay.

And on that note... another annoyance to me (especially have just
watched a TNG episode) is the constant background "engine" rumble. Not
only does it not make sense for non-mechanical engines to make such a
sound (sounds more like a four-engine jetliner), but you'd think in an
ultra-advanced starship like that, they'd have come up with slightly
better sound deadening that didn't leave ambient engine noise at a level
that makes conversation difficult almost anywhere on the ship. Can you
imagine the long-term hearing damage caused by a constant low-frequency
rumble at that level???

My company is in the process of moving and one option we are pricing out
is a sound deadening system. They are amazing. Walk into a busy office
and its quiet. Turn the system off and all the background noise assaults
you.

Man, I could use one of those, particularly one that takes out yapping
dogs and teenagers hanging out under trees.
