I think you'd be safe with an Enterprise that looked like the original

And on that note... another annoyance to me (especially have just
watched a TNG episode) is the constant background "engine" rumble. Not
only does it not make sense for non-mechanical engines to make such a
sound (sounds more like a four-engine jetliner), but you'd think in an
ultra-advanced starship like that, they'd have come up with slightly
better sound deadening that didn't leave ambient engine noise at a level
that makes conversation difficult almost anywhere on the ship. Can you
imagine the long-term hearing damage caused by a constant low-frequency
rumble at that level???

Funny -- the TOS noise always reminded me of the gear sound in the old
trains on the IND, the ones with the rattan seats. Which seems rather
unwarplike and a clinker among the otherwise excellent and IMO
unsurpassed until Star Wars SFX of TOS.

OTOH, it's better than the wheezing of the TARDIS! And who knows what
a warp engine would sound like, anyway? I'm guessing that they chose
it for dramatic purposes -- something familiar enough to be of clear
provenance and give the audience a sense of straining engines. Like
the "whoosh" -- nothing sillier than hearing the whoosh of a ship
passing in a vacuum, but according to Rodenberry, the opening credits
didn't work without it, and Drama Trumps All.
