Re: Orion CEV...Apollo Strikes Back

The boosters are based on existing shuttle technology, using solid rockets

kinds of boosters, but I didn't catch what they were for.

The current plan's use of two boosters is to lift the lunar transit module
into LEO seperately from the crew. The main benefit here is that a manned
leo only rocket is needed to do the zeroG research and ISS support missions
the shuttle currently does, but would not be large enough to carry out the
lunar mission. Sending the crew seperately means that the bigger rocket
will not need to be manrated saving a large amount of time and money.

The bottom stages of both the Ares I manned and Ares V cargo rockets will
use a larger version of the Shuttles Solider Rocket Boosters (SRB)s (5 fuel
sections instead of 4). The Ares I will use a single SRB stack, while the
larger Ares V will use two SRB stacks in addition to 5 RS68 engines from the
deltaIV. Currently the plan is to use a resurected version of the J2-X
engine from the saturn as the upper stage of both Ares varienets. At
present none of the engine selections are finalized and more changes are
definately possible.

The space shuttle main engine (SSME) is largely out of the picture at this
point. The primary problem is that the SSME is too complex and expensive
for a throw away, as well as requiring additional design/engineering effort
to be converted into an air startable form.
