Yes, "barleycorn" means the grains of barley. Corn,
or Maize, is a new world plant but some varieties of it
were in India at least two thousand years before
Columbus. There seems to be some good evidence that
it was used some in Europe earlier but didn't become
a big deal until other varieties were brought back by
Columbus and later voyages. I think it was the Vorlon
who first brought it to Asia and Europe.
