Found an interesting thread which explains why they switched from the
SSME to the J2X on the Ares 1:
'NASA *is* following the ESAS plan. The study seriously considered the
five-segment RSRB with J2S option, which was actually predicted to be
cheaper than the four-segment with SSME design (both were less costly
on a per-flight basis, and provided less loss-of-crew risk, than Delta
IV). The two designs were nearly tied, but four-segment won out due to
the desire to get CLV flying as fast as possible. When detailed
engineering work began post-ESAS, the five-segment option was
reconsidered.'

I see too that they've dropped the methane engine -- that one's a
mystery to me, given its importance to a Mars mission . . .
