The proportion of chronically uninsured (more than 6 month for lack of a
better cut off is much less, but obviously still too high. This is also
(marginally, very marginally) lower when you tease out those who
voluntarily don't take insurance (a kid of a friend of mine who noted
that health insurance at his place was so much he couldn't afford his
new Mustang) and those counted as uninsured who have access to MCare,
but haven't signed up. (Anecdotal (anecdote is not the singular of data)
indicates this might be a fairly hefty number.)

Unfortunately, those who are "voluntarily uninsured" are a tax on the
rest of us, since inevitably we pick up the tab through Medicaid,
charity care, unpaid bills, bankruptcies, and the high cost of
treating conditions only after they become emergencies.
