With the new High Definition Formats upon us I was wondering how
difficult it would be for Babylon 5 to make the transition. I understand
that the show was shot in 35 mm so there should be no problem there.
However I was wondering about the special effects. I know they were not
originally done in 16:9 and they may not be formated for 720p or 1080i. If
anyone has information about how Babylon 5 may be able to make the leap
toward high def then please let us know.
I imagine some sort of upconversion may be necessary for the special
effects.
The problem with special effects and so-called composite
shots are that they exist only as composite NTSC masters
in 4:3 format. They have already shown to be problematic
with the current DVD releases, because they were not
mastered to 16:9 in the (technically) best possible way.
For a more technical discussion, please have a look at
my web page "How Babylon 5 Is Transferred to DVD", at
