So the impression I'm getting is that the fully rendered special effects were not done in HD.
As I recall, some weren't even done in widescreen, which led to problems with the existing DVD versions as well.
Moreover those renders and the models and scences used to create them are no longer in existence?
I seem to remember hearing that...
This is pathetic given that Babylon 5 was shot with an eye toward the HD future future (it was the only show done in widescreen in the early '90s as far as I know). I wonder if the existing images can be upconverted for an HD release.
Wouldn't really be a point... a good HD set can do the upconversion itself, to 780 or 1080 or whatever it supports. What would be the incentive for the studio to put in the time and expense to do it? Either way, it's still only going to be as good as the source material.
Is this negligence on Warner Bros. part or is this standard in the industry?
As the story goes, the files were lost BY WB. There were no backups, nobody was allowed to keep any copies. Exactly how or by whom they were lost, or just what "lost" means (deleted? misplaced?) we may never know.
