Well, actually, when they first came out they were superior to casettes. It was a media battle like the two advanced DVD formats that are about to fight it out. At that time, you could get more music on an 8-track and it was higher qulaity. But there was one really major flaw that killed them. You couldn't record on an 8-track without a very expensive machine. Casettes won out, and improved in quality, and 8-track went away. As for seen them, I have some still, from my early married life, but no way to play them.
