I don't think that you can unring that bell. The only successful example of
ignoring a sequel and continuing that I can think of is Highlander 2, and
that's only because it was so bad it's too painful to think of and only
a few people saw it anyway.
Most people have already accepted the stories into the Trek universe.
If you thought the silly "Who's better, Picard or Kirk?" debates were bad,
imagine what would happen with
"Yeah, but Picard never existed!"
"Did too!"
"Did not!"
Of course I suppose you could hire Patric Duffy for a scene in a holo shower
and say it was all a bad dream.
