I don't know that "sane" (or insane) is the right word to use in
Cain's case.
re-watching the pilot mini after seeing this episode gave me some
"compare and contrast" moments -- Would Adama acted in a similar way
if he didn't have someone in the government who would step in as the
civillian leader after the first Cylon attack? Certainly Roslyn flat
out asked him as much shortly after she took office and they met on
Galactica (She said "Are you planning a military coup?") - and that's
the impression of what Cain already did.
I filled in a lot of my own backstory for the Pegasus (because they
didn't do it on air), thinking that Pegasus also went looking for
civillian survivor ships, but instead of putting a fleet together,
took people off the ships and conscripted them. Galactaca wasn't
shorthanded by 700 crewmen like Pegasus was (I'm assuming that these
were people on shore leave when the attack happened).
And Cain did just what Adama *wanted* to do at first, but she didn't
have the wisdom of Rosyln telling her that the war is over, and we
have lost, and we have to run and hide somewhere where the Cylons
aren't going to find us and start making babies. (paraphrased from
Roslyn's speech during the pilot).
It's just too bad that Cain has let her power go to her head. Curious,
though -- just how is the Pegasus able to counter the Cylon
"disablement ray" or whatever the weapon was that killed the fleet and
vipers? And it would also be nice to know how long it's been since the
initial attack - months? a year and a half? What?
I hope the conscripted deck chief isn't a Cylon - I like him.
