I always assumed one was NOT on the planet when looking for the
constellations. As you say, like a planetarium. But I began
wondering... are the constellation positions nearly constant no matter
where we are in solar orbit? If so, HOW can that be unless they pace
us around the sun? That doesn't seem likely.

I don't think we have any ref to what Earth year the BSG story is set
in. BUT... Whether Earth is the origin or just another colony, didn't
all the colonists leave about the same time? Can you imagine preparing
12 fleets with thousands of ships ready for deep space TODAY? We still
don't have the tech or funds for just one small ship with minimal
stores. Baring an FTL or wormhole trick (including Warp drive),
current estimates say the ship has to be multi generational. The
trained and prepared pioneers will never reach their destination. The
colonists, eons before the BSG timeline, had to have the tech and
resources to not just survive, but settle at least 1 planet and THRIVE.
So it's not likely they could arrive in today's Earth, baring time
travel, since the colonist could not leave here for some 200 years,
maybe.

Yes, and that made no sense and was VERY badly done.

Yes it would! And that's still 250 years from now. With hyperspace,
B5 has deep space ability, but they still haven't reached the galactic
rim. Didn't BSG indicate that the 'far, far away' was way out of their
galaxie?

Kobol might have been on the fringe, but that doesn't seem likely.
Suppose the colonists found a planet to restock supplies, but was not
suitable for sustained colonies. It would be just within range of Earth
travel, but they continued and could have restocked 12 or 50 times
until they reached Kobol. It would then be FAR out of customary travel
range. Caprica was far from Kobol and required jumps. Just WHEN did
they get JUMP ability? The colonist may not have had it, so the
decendants of the colonists, after maybe 100,000 years traveling, found
Kobol. Some time later they settled on Caprica, built up a society and
tech. It would take many years to build the infra structure to begin
to build the fruits of any innovations or R&D during flight.
Now the 'old' names for the constellations being preserved
somewhere is possible. But even with studying the old stories and
prophecies, it seems unlikely the Pres could easily name all of them.

Kobol is the touchstone and probably the first remote colony this group
set up. They built their churches, found protective caves, and saved
precious relics their great-great....great grandparents passed on. The
use of the arrow to unlock the planetarium map indicates that they felt
a need to isolate it from the vulgus or unknown dangers. Keeping the
arrow on Caprica greatly separates the key from the safe.

YES! This is an interesting open thread. Why DO the cylons know more
about human religions? Why DO they have just one TRUE God? Isn't that
what monotheists say to primitives and others who worship multiple
gods? ...chicken or egg? And who is which? If, as this BSG says,
humans made the cylons, humans must be older. So why is cylon tech
better in many areas? When cylons left Caprica, they would have had
tech only as good as the human's. Probably less. Look at our best
weapons and fighters. We have much more powerful secret weapons in
various stages of R&D that only a few can know about. Wouldn't the
Capricans also restrict their R&D? So how did cylons develop such
advanced bio tech? Capricans would have had the same starter set that
the clyons left with, and had years of experience building cylons. AND
they wouldn't stop research on better machines that could match cylons
despite any public protests.

It seems very likely that the human Baltar was cloned years earlier and
a sleeper clone replaced him. Since he is programmed to believe he is
human, he would be afraid of the nucs. 6 only comforted him as they
were both destroyed on Caprica. The replacement Baltar joined the
fleet. With organic tech, the connection to the cylons need not be a
chip or even in the skull. A 'skin' of a few million cells could be
wrapped around or in the spinal cord. A little like the TECH (non
spoiler to those who know what that is). They may be advanced enough
to put that bio tech in a toe or heel!
