Why do mammals hair turn white as they get older?

 Um, snow camouflage for Protectors?

Perhaps the exact opposite of camouflage. It makes it easier for
predators to spot the old members of the species, thus slightly
decreasing the chances of the younger, fertile members of the species
from being predated.

Referring back to the thread title, the Silverback of a band of
gorillas is the last one you want to attack, and the first one to put
up a fight if you attack any other member.

Sort of like how a hunter with a duck-call is the last human a duck
wants to get near? ;P
Maybe the Silverback's genes want them to attract predators so they
can dispose of them before predators get near more vulnerable members
of the band.
