In reality, of course, there'd be pretty easy mechanisms of determining
whether you were on the Earth or out in intergalactic space, such as
looking out a window.
Q: You are in a in a space capsule without windows. You feel weightless.
Is there any test you can perform to determine whether you are very
far away from any large masses or falling towards the Earth?
A: Wait.
And then what? If you're in orbit, you could be waiting a very long time.
In practice, of course, you could merely take advantage of non-locality
and test the tidal force on your capsule. This will give you some
indication of how close you are to something big.
