I have been reading the popular scientific articles about Dark Matter,
and am having trouble digesting the concept.

Join the club. I went to a talk about dark matter, which mentioned dark
energy, then postulated mirror matter. Then some kid said "If you can have
mirror matter can you have mirror gravity?" but the scientists said (to
paraphrase) "No".

I'd really like to see what someone like Greg Egan could do.
