: What is it like? If I could ignore my local gravity generators and
: just feel the galactic gravity, how strong is it here and elsewhere?
Well... of course you wouldn't feel it at all, to a first
approximation. Since if you removed all the local sources of gravity,
you'd be freefalling.
Hm. Based on a quick google for radius and period of the sun's galactic
orbit, I get 1.5e-11 g. A bit more than a hundred-billionth of earth
gravity. I dunno whether I calculated that rightly (four pi squared
ar over period squared, ie dubya (er... omega) squared over ar, right?),
but whatever the correct number, it is powerfully weak.
Oh, and I also don't know if I googled the correct radius and period;
about 2.5e20 meters and 8e15 seconds.
: If you're along the galactic plane/equator, I presume you'd "feel" it
: as pulling straight towards galactic center , but if you were off the
: equator there'd be some component pulling you towards that plane, yes?
Yes. Note that you get an acceleration that's due to the mass inwards
of your position only (well... that's strictly true only for spherical
distribution of mass, but then, most of the mass of our galaxy is
actually due to the dark matter, so the plane-wards component
you note above shoud be very weak indeed).
