"Blood Music" by Greg Bear.
I hear (some good) things about "Darwin's Radio" as well, but have yet
to read it.
As for artificial intelligence, I am sick of "AI as evil" stories.
I didn't realize that AIs could be written as anything besides
malevolent homicidal killbots. I think it's an unwritten rule of SF.
Any recommendations?
If you don't mind a little space opera, I could suggest Peter
Hamilton's Commonwealth Saga ("Pandora's Star" and "Judas Unchained").
He describes some interesting biotech and nanotech applications, and
there's a super-powerful AI that probably doesn't want to kill
everything. Might be a bit out of the realm of what you're looking for
though, as those elements aren't the core of the story.
